The best food trucks in Lisbon
While in Lisbon you may forget the notion of food trucks as places for just a quick bite on the go. Of course these options do exist and, as much as we’d love to, there isn’t always enough time for a leisurely meal. But, in recent years, particularly thanks to tourism, our city has also seen a new wave of mobile restaurants which showcase traditional recipes and modern flavors of Portuguese cuisine, to be enjoyed right outside on the streets, yet in an unhurried way – otherwise, how would you explain the existence of food trucks entirely dedicated to oysters or local wines?
Food trucks have become a global phenomenon, even in countries where street food isn’t all that much a part of the local eating habits, such as here in Portugal. Originating as a convenient solution for quick and affordable meals in fast-paced cities, they have rapidly evolved into a worldwide trend, often giving entrepreneurs and chefs the opportunity to embrace their creativity in a way that they simply wouldn’t be able to afford in a classic restaurant context. In recent years, in world cities across the globe, food trucks went from serving simple snacks to becoming culinary icons, hosting a variety of inspired and high-quality food options. This trend has eventually been embraced in Lisbon as well, where food trucks offer a blend of international flavors and Portuguese dishes, traditional and reinvented from a more contemporary lens, thus appealing to locals and travelers.

Lisbon’s food trucks now represent a dual culinary phenomenon. On one hand, traditional “roulotes” continue to offer hearty staples like Portuguese meat sandwiches and international fast food favorites like hot dogs and burgers. On the other hand, gourmet food trucks keep popping up, serving both innovative Portuguese dishes and international cuisines to a more diverse audience. These gourmet trucks are often found in tourist-heavy areas such as the picturesque riverfronts between Alcântara and Belém (particularly around the MAAT Museum as you’re coming from downtown Lisbon towards Belém), or right downtown in areas such as Ribeira das Naus, between Baixa and Cais do Sodré, allowing customers to enjoy their food slowly with scenic views. More than food, these modern food trucks are now serving experiences.
Interestingly, the line between food trucks and permanent dining spots has begun to blur. Many food trucks in Lisbon are now semi-permanent in specific locations, equipped with tables and chairs for diners to relax and enjoy their meals. Furthermore, the integration of services like Uber Eats and Bolt Food allows these trucks to serve a wider audience, reinforcing their role as a modern and integral part of Lisbon’s food scene.
Roulotes: Lisbon’s old school food trucks
Roulote Zé das Bifanas
Located a stone’s throw from the McDonald’s at Restelo, Roulote Zé das Bifanas is a celebrated food truck run by José Gomes, who in his mid 50s, is affectionately known as Zé das Bifanas. Three years into the venture, José expanded his operations with a second truck near Hospital São Francisco Xavier and is a regular fixture outside football stadiums on game days. While José’s menu includes various items like hot dogs, hamburgers, and the traditional pork rind sandwiches (sandes de courato), as the name clearly implies the bifanas are the stars. These simple yet delicious pork sandwiches are a favorite among locals. Despite the name, José is also renowned for his hamburgers, which some patrons prefer even over the options available at popular nearby fast-food outlets. This preference speaks not only of the quality of the food, but also the careful service that can act as friendly company on a rough day, those days when we need a comforting bite and a word to match, to brighten up our day. It’s not just the affordable prices or the convenient locations that make José’s food trucks popular, but the heartfelt service and the tasty offerings that keep locals like us coming back.

Roulotte da Xuxú
Roulotte da Xuxú, also known locally as Roulote da Pontinha due to its location, is quite a hidden gem. The food truck is run by Natália, affectionately known as Xuxú, who has been running the business for over 10 years. However, it’s her husband, Pedro Simões, a former butcher, who often greets the customers. On a lively weekend night, when things get super busy, the couple often sells around 200 hamburgers, which are quite good and incredible value for money. Besides their best seller, they also have hot dogs, sandwiches in baguette bread and the old school sandwiches which in Lisbon are synonyms of food trucks, sandes de courato, featuring grilled or fried pork rind tucked inside a crusty bread roll. No matter what option you go for, as a meat connoisseur, Pedro prides himself on the quality of their food, particularly of the meats, which he knows is crucial in keeping the food lovers coming back. Tucked far away from the typical tourist paths, this roulote is a true local treasure of Lisbon’s street food scene.

Roulote Da Loira
Roulote Da Loira (which translates as “the blonde lady’s food truck”), more commonly referred to by locals as Roulote de Sete Rios due to its location, is known for its down-to-earth vibe and straightforward yet satisfying menu. At Roulote Da Loira, the food options include a classic array of street food favorites such as burgers, hot dogs, bifanas and pregos, alongside more diverse options like pita breads stuffed with shoarma, picanha, chicken, and vegetables. What sets this food truck apart, aside from its diverse menu, is the homemade mayonnaise, a rarity in this kind of set up. The ambiance at Roulote Da Loira is unpretentiously local and welcoming. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t claim to reinvent the wheel and, instead, it focuses on perfecting the classics. Despite its humble setting, Roulote Da Loira has garnered significant praise, with some enthusiasts boldly claiming it serves “the best burger in Portugal.” The food truck also features a very peculiar and memorable slogan: “Jesus Christ is sponsoring my victory.” We believe that if you are hungry in the area late at night, you’ll also leave feeling victorious.

Roulote TiZé
Located on the road between Moscavide and Sacavém, Restaurante Roulote TiZé is an essential stop for any dedicated food truck enthusiast visiting the Lisbon area. While not in Lisbon proper, omitting TiZé from any roundup of local food trucks would be a glaring oversight. This roulote has evolved from a simple food cart into a dining hub that feels more like a stationary fast-food restaurant than a traditional food truck. It’s decked out with tables, chairs, and flat-screen TVs, creating an ambiance reminiscent of an American diner. The man behind this transformation, José Antunes, launched TiZé in 1995 after a career shift from the pharmaceutical industry. The menu here is designed to satisfy hearty appetites with dishes like the hamburgão, a massive burger with lettuce, tomato, onion, ham, cheese, bacon, and egg; the prego especial, a beef sandwich with ham, cheese, bacon, onions and a fried egg, tucked inside a rustic bread roll; and the bifana especial, which consists on the same, replacing the beef steak for pork. Like most old school food trucks, TiZé isn’t just about the food and it’s mostly about the experience. Operating late into the night, it caters to a diverse crowd of night owls, including shift workers and party goers. If you come here, you may like the food more or less, but one thing is for sure: you will experience a side of local life rarely seen by tourists. For those unable to visit in person, TiZé is also available on delivery platforms like Uber Eats but, let’s face it, coming here is part (or shall we say most?) of the fun!

Pescaria
Pescaria is yet another example of culinary ambition on wheels, in the scenic waterfront area near Belém. This innovative venture was sparked by Oliver Gil, who, after relocating from Venezuela and dabbling in various entrepreneurial efforts, stumbled into the food truck scene alongside his business partner, Tomás Falcão e Cunha. Inspired by similar concepts discovered along Italy’s Amalfi Coast, they launched Pescaria with the vision of creating a unique dining experience that combines the elegance of champagne with the freshness of seafood. The ambiance of Pescaria is designed not just for quick bites but for lingering and savoring. The truck is equipped with seating, inviting diners to relax under the shade and take their time enjoying the carefully prepared dishes that showcase the freshness and quality that Oliver insists on. From garlic shrimp to clams with Bulhão Pato sauce, to fried cuttlefish (choco frito) and grilled sardines (sardinhas assadas), each dish is crafted to offer a taste of the sea that is authentic and delicious. The food truck also serves a variety of champagnes and sparkling wines, perfect for pairing with seafood. In the world of food trucks, no doubt Pescaria offers quite a luxurious experience.

Canto da Sereia by Miss Can
Canto da Sereia by Miss Can is a delightful extension of the Miss Can brand, which has a full-fledged restaurant near the Castelo São Jorge area (Largo do Contador Mor 17). Founded by the proud successor of a third-generation family business deeply intertwined with the canning industry, Miss Can brings a gourmet twist to the concept of canned fish, elevating it far beyond the supermarket shelves of simple sardines. In Portugal, canned seafood is not just a convenience food. Thanks to the high-quality fish, meticulous preparation, and innovative flavor combinations that characterize the industry, it’s considered a gourmet delicacy. Portuguese canned fish like tuna, sardines, and mackerel are often preserved in high-quality olive oils, spiced with rich flavors, or combined with other gourmet ingredients, making them a lovely petisco. At Canto da Sereia, this legacy of quality and creativity is perfectly blended into a charming cocktail bar experience. Situated in a quaintly converted caravan, this tiny bar offers a refreshing stop along the Tejo River, where visitors can enjoy cool drinks paired with spectacular views. Despite its compact size, the atmosphere at Canto da Sereia is inviting, enhanced by the friendly and helpful bartenders who are ready to serve excellent drinks, paired with gourmet toasts topped with Miss Can’s seafood selections. Even in the setting of a food truck, Miss Can manages to showcase the unique taste of the gourmet possibilities that, here in Portugal, lie within a can.

Mister Tapas
Mister Tapas is a celebration of Spanish and Portuguese cultures, beautifully situated to offer some of the best views in Lisbon. Starting from a modest setup on a Piaggio motorcycle along the scenic riverside of Belém, Mister Tapas has evolved into a lively spot where tapas are served with great enthusiasm. Guests are encouraged to eat, drink, smile, and live life to the fullest. The offerings at Mister Tapas feature an array of freshly made tapas that include Spanish classics such as croquetas, patatas bravas, and garlic shrimp. The grill adds a smoky depth to more substantial dishes like lomo al trapo, picanha, and entrecôte, showcasing the grilling traditions shared by Spanish and Portuguese cuisines. Wine With a View
Wine With a View brings a refreshing twist to the traditional wine tasting experience by combining the stunning landscapes of Lisbon with the exquisite flavors of Portuguese wines. Founded in 2014 by Bárbara Vidal de Moraes, Wine With a View was born from a dream to promote the various wine regions of Portugal. The venture started with a 1965 converted Portuguese Famel motorcycle, establishing its first sales point at the iconic Castelo de São Jorge. This picturesque setting provided the perfect backdrop for introducing customers, mostly foreign visitors, to a selection of fine wines, served by the glass at one of Lisbon’s highest viewpoints. The concept quickly captured the hearts of wine enthusiasts and tourists, leading to the expansion of sales points to other scenic locations around Lisbon, including Torre de Belém and Padrão dos Descobrimentos, where you can find Wine With a View’s truck today. This business manages to showcase the quality and diversity of Portuguese wines, in such an unexpected but truly lovely setting.

Food trucks for sweet treats in Lisbon
Paula das Farturas
Also in the area of Belém, Paula das Farturas offers a taste of Portuguese festivities all year round. Typically, trucks like these are seen buzzing with activity at summer festivals and local celebrations, such as the Saint Anthony festival, serving up traditional fried sweets that are synonymous with festivity in Portugal. Among these, farturas and churros are the stars, and while both are deep-fried dough treats, they are not to be mistaken with one another. Farturas are similar to large, fluffy doughnuts, typically sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon right after frying. Churros, on the other hand, are generally thinner and may be enjoyed plain or with various fillings like chocolate or jam, adding a delightful surprise inside the crispy exterior. Paula das Farturas goes beyond the usual offerings found at typical farturas trucks. Run by Paula herself (whose job would be known in Portuguese as fartureira), she ensures that each treat is perfect. Her food truck is renowned for its creative approach, especially with the introduction of birthday packs and super festive combos that feature an array of fried sweets, including farturas and churros, as well as waffles, served with a variety of fillings, toppings, and fun decorative elements that make them a hit at parties, way beyond the more straightforward context of eating them right in front of the food truck or taking a stroll nearby.

While often spotted along Belém’s picturesque riverfront, OraBolas keeps food enthusiasts on their toes with its changing locations, appearing at the Mercado de Santa Clara during flea market days and popping up in other vibrant spots like Parque das Nações or even outside the city proper. For those looking to track down this roving delight, checking their Instagram for the latest updates is the best strategy. OraBolas specializes in bolas de Berlim (aka Berliners), a beloved Portuguese pastry similar to a doughnut but without a hole, traditionally filled with rich egg jam (doce de ovos). These treats are a staple in Portuguese cafes and beachside vendors, but OraBolas elevates them with a variety of creative fillings. Alongside the classic egg jam, they offer options like chocolate, strawberry, lemon, apple & cinnamon, and more.
