Where to find Portuguese food and wine in The Netherlands
At Taste of Lisboa we’re committed to bringing you the best flavors of Portugal no matter where in the world you are! Ideally, we look forward to welcoming you in Lisbon for one of our food & cultural walks. Roaming up and down the city of the seven hills, exploring small local businesses, stopping for a bite at an authentic family-owned restaurant, splitting a bottle of Portuguese wine while sharing more about our history, culture and way of life. But who’s to say you can’t start exploring Portuguese gastronomy even before you take a trip to Portugal?
Last month we brought you a selected directory of places where you can find genuine Portuguese restaurants, food and wines in Germany. To expand this endeavor, we have curated a list of places where you can indulge in Portuguese dishes, baked goods and drinks in The Netherlands, a country where almost a quarter of a million Portuguese people reside nowadays.
Whether you are in Amsterdam or somewhere else in the country, these are the businesses you should keep in mind to help you explore the incredible range of Portuguese ingredients and flavors:
BEST PORTUGUESE RESTAURANTS, CAFÉS AND PASTRY SHOPS IN THE NETHERLANDS
AMSTERDAM
Franggo De Pijp
Delicious Portuguese-style chicken with two locations in Amsterdam. A straightforward menu very similar to the offerings you’d normally find in Portuguese BBQ houses in our country, where you can usually order charcoal-grilled chicken by the unit or half. Simple yet effective sides include fries, tomato salad and rice.
Do not forget the sauces, from the most beloved (and spicy!) piri-piri, to aromatic garlic butter lemon, or even a mix of both! Eat in or enjoy at home ordering via the most popular home delivery services.

AND Eerste Sweelinckstraat 9h, 1073 CK, Amsterdam
Restaurant Portugália
This is one of the highest rated and most authentic Portuguese restaurants in The Netherlands. If you’re missing Portuguese cuisine in Amsterdam, or would simply like to explore our beautiful range of foods as a sort of appetizer before you visit Portugal, Portugália can certainly take your taste buds on a trip!
Their menu focuses on traditional Portuguese cuisine, from typical appetizers such as shrimp rissóis and octopus salad, to main courses that make salted codfish the star of the plate, and even Lisbon classics like grilled sardines. For dessert, do not miss their farófias, soft poached meringues that are usually not that common outside of Portugal!
📍 Bakkersstraat 12, 1017 CW Amsterdam
The Can Bar
Unpretentious and fun, this bar serves fish preserves straight out of the can, like several businesses do in Lisbon these days too! But these aren’t regular canned goods. Instead, expect high quality Portuguese fish preserved in some of the most delicious olive oil, and marinades ranging from herby and aromatic to spicy.
Just like in Portugal, the most popular canned fishes include sardines, mackerel, tuna, anchovies, codfish and octopus. Delicious seafood pâtés also make an appearance at The Can Bar, as well as the unmissable pastel de nata for dessert. Wash it all down with a Portuguese beer or wine and enjoy!

Saboroso
Paulo, who was born in Lisbon, moved to The Netherlands where he met his wife Liliane. Together they started Saboroso, a tasty project that “combines their love for Portugal with their passion for good quality food”. Saboroso’s menu blends traditional and modern elements of Portuguese cuisine in a relaxed and cosy setting.
Saboro’s entire team comes from Portugal, so you can enjoy authentic recipes paired with Portuguese wines selected by Paulo and Liliane themselves. When the good weather allows, enjoy your meal on the outside terrace, just like you would if you’re visiting Lisbon during the spring or summer!

HELMOND
Pastelaria Lusa
Saudade is that hard to define the feeling of longing and nostalgia that is commonly associated with the Portuguese temperament. When you feel saudade for Portugal and its foods, a visit to a pastelaria, a typical Portuguese pastry shop, is often a good move towards feeding that melancholy and filling yourself with positive Portuguese vibes.
When in North Brabant, visit Pastelaria Lusa, and enjoy their home-made sandwiches, cakes and pastries. Not only the cakes are just like those you’d have in pastry stores across Portugal, the prices ranging from €1 to €1.50 also match the Portuguese love for a good deal!
📍Molenstraat 132 5701 KK, Helmond
MEDEMBLIK
Costas
Filipe and Margo opened the doors of Costas in Medemblik back in 1995. Apart from their regular menu that includes appetizers, main dishes, desserts and special dishes each month, they cater an experience by the name of The Portuguese Table: starting with at least four participants, you can book this tasting experience with four courses, including a platter with four different desserts. If you’d like to immerse yourself in the world of Portuguese cuisine abroad, we can’t think of a more enticing option… particularly if paired with their wine pairing menu!
📍 Oosterhaven 19, 1671 AA, Medemblik
ROTTERDAM
Paladar
Paladar, Portuguese word for taste, is Rotterdam’s very first Portuguese restaurant. Embracing the principles of simplicity and purity of ingredients of traditional Portuguese cuisine, Paladar serves main dishes always cooked in Portuguese olive oil, and also smaller snacks which you can even enjoy at the counter like we often do in Portugal when having something lighter. Espresso and Portuguese pastries are also readily available, as they would be in most medium sized eateries in Portugal.
If you’d like to throw a party with Portuguese flavors, Paladar also offers a catering service with Portuguese specialties and quite a selection of petiscos that will pair beautifully with their list of Portuguese wines!

VOORSCHOTEN
Frango da Ria
No frills Portuguese grilled chicken for pick up, delivery or to eat in while you take a peek behind the scenes. Their menu is not your usual Portuguese BBQ place menu: instead of just grilled items, it mixes our typical grilled chicken (half or whole, as per tradition), along with other suggested small dishes and appetizers such as choco frito (fried squid strips), prego (portuguese steak sandwich) and Francesinha (the ultimate saucy sandwich from the north of Portugal) – learn more about these and other Portuguese meat sandwiches here!

Casa Piri Piri
Taste some of the greatest Portuguese classics in the North of Holland at Casa Piri Piri.
